the 70-200 f4 is a fair bit lighter i believe and probably just as good for equine photography depending on where you are using it and what you are shooting.

i use the 70-200 2.8 but even at indoor events rarely go below f4 due to the depth of field with a moving target.

Emm are you using a battery grip with your 7d?

it will give more stability with that huge L lens, it make the camera/lens balance better which makes it seem less heavy as i find your not physically using the muscles in your wrist lower arm to keep the lens level as it were.

on the downside if you have small hands you may not like it and it adds a little more weight all be it in a better position.

a good shooting position will also help with the distribution of the weight
I have never failed But i have discovered thousands of approches which don't work.
