I actually agree totally - for a while i put on my profile "don't use the c word." I meant chaperone, of course.

Its a bloody stupid word that brings to mind images of Bronte-esque tea dances, and middle American school trips.

Seriously though, at root is basically a term that refers to mis-trust, the assumed need for supervision and treating adults like children.

Chaperone is such a stupid word anyway. What about:

companion, convoy, duenna, escort, governess, guard, guardian, guide , shepherd, matron, monitor, overseer, protector, safeguard, scout, surveillant, usher
 

I love the thesaurus... hope you don't mind if I bring my shepherd with me to do the shoot.

Your thesaurus missed out "bag-carrying pimp", used by a photographer in a tv documentary about one of the yester-year glamour models (Melinda Messenger if I remember correctly).
