I'm currently writing a new book and I'm really interested to hear from any of you with constructive views on this. I'd love to hear from models and photographers, so what does 'Erotic Photography' mean to you? For example:
What sort of images? What sort of poses? Does it have to be explicit or not? If you are a model, is this a genre that interests you, and why?

Many thanks in advance, John.

In my view, something is erotic (i.e. pornographic - erotic is just a euphemism for pornographic) if it is intended to (or can be reasonably expected to) sexually arouse the target audience. It makes no odds what the actual content of the images is. It is only the intended (or reasonably expected) effect among those the images are aimed at which counts.

Erotic, to me, means to tease the viewer while showing off the beauty of the female form. Its designed to provoke and show off just enough of the body to make the viewer think. Porn, to me, is designed so that men can sexually get off on it while sitting on the bog.

To me it is photography with sexually suggestive/charged imagery but without being blatent wanking material. This doesn't prevent it from being strong of course, simply that there's been more thought in the image than to simply light the thing with two brolleys at 45°.

Ultimately it's quite hard to describe but I know it if I see it.

Erotic causes sexual arousal of the mind.

Porn just arouses the other, more Southernly bits.

That's a bit simplistic (and verging on blind generalisation, but after all the porn I looked at as a teenager, a little blindness is to be expected), but to me an erotic image should be conveying an image, or message, or implication that causes the arousal, something that fuels the mind into finding the sexuality within the image (or within the words, in the case of erotic writings), and not simply be a case of "Way hey! Tits!".

Two brollies at 45 degrees, at one to one? You are a tough one to please Redchecker, that's how I do most of mine

erotic photography to me is sexually charged.
ie not just a photo of a naked form but rather an image that also suggests sexual activity. For this reason it is also quite subjective.

There are no rules! And if there were, we should all be looking to break them.

No.  It's like saying that Wildlife Photography is the same as taking a few snaps of animals in a zoo.

To me it means having to interrogate the photographer to find out what they mean well in advance of the shoot!

Really neat response.  The problem is I wouldn't know how to put it into words.  I know it when I see it, and with models that I've worked with several times we work towards what I think are erotic images, but if I tried to explain it to you it would sound like so much bull-shit.
