The Ryder Cup will generate millions of pounds, public money has already been spent in bringing it here on the premise that it will bring much needed jobs and investment into Scotland.

So why can't they actually pay people to do the jobs that need done?

I guess they are relying on true golf lovers who don't mind fronting up cash to be part of the ryder cup.

I guess they are, but that's not the point. They've made a big thing about the money and jobs it's going to provide so why not actually employ people and let some of that money filter down to people who need it instead of using some middle class blokes that can afford £75 and a few days off work?

Golf is not supposed to be for the common man!

Why not, I'm common as muck and I play it.

I'm still struggling to play off 28 and am very common, but golfing etiquette is there for a reason. Ryder cup high standard means only getting the most accomplished support staff they can find.

You're getting confused. In Scotland it is for the common man, it's England where it's a snooty game.

How are you holding the stick, with the rubbery bit at the top or bottom?

(please note, I no longer teach golf, but can pass on tips)

I used to have that problem, but then I remembered what Arnold Palmer said about getting his wife to kiss his balls for luck and I lost my windmill anxiety.

You get clothing and food so I am guessing you will come out even..ish...maybe.

Golf is a very rich competition (sport ? higher, faster, stronger...I don't think so... more a passtime) so it seems mean to make volunteers pay for anything.
I guess the rich will always show their real colours like this. They just can't help themselves.

It all feels a bit sad and tacky...a bit like the Aussies bowling under arm...or ball boys being kicked.

The jobs will mostly be in the catering, accomodation and tourism businesses. There's no point paying people when others are prepared to pay to do the work.

Why do we pay the Royal Family then ? Shouldn't the competitors also pay, they could at least pay their own expenses and leave their team of free-loaders at home.
