Edgy - I shoot edgy nudes, but what do models understand by the term 'Edgy'

I believe that when I post a casting call for 'Edgy Nude' models, both the models and I know exactly what we mean and work well together (check my portfolio if it helps). But what do YOU, as MODELS think the term 'Edgy' means? What does it mean to you? I'd really like to know for my new book. Thanks for helping! John

Hrm..

I know if I say it I mean a little gritty/raw and not the usual pretty nudes.

However I've been asked to do edgy nudes in the past, and have asked for clarification of what they mean by "edgy" and have had concepts from "flowers on my vagina" to "playing dead over a gravestone" - or they have used the term edgy when what they really meant was erotic - very erotic.

Had a look at your work, I actually think its more spiral than edgy

I don't think it means anything, apart from possibly "I want to shoot something outside the norm".

If someone approached me saying "I want to shoot edgy nudes" I'd ask for clarification, because like Chrissie said it could mean anything really.

Like 'on the edge'? Perhaps something that's totally at the boundary of what's acceptable? Or with an undertone which puts the scene on edge? Sharply defined and delineated?

It's a barely functional term used to cover a gap in imagination or intent, usually more spurious than spiral.

Edgey has two meanings that I'm aware of:

1. Nervous; "on edge".

2. Borrowing a style or mottiff that is supposed to suggest the risqué, sexual, or unconventional, while in fact staying safe for the coffee table. Closely related in concept to non-pornographic "fetish".

Thanks for all the helpful responses folks. I'm particularly interested to hear from MODELS because they are often the last to be asked, and models often have a different understanding of the term 'edgy' (especially 'edgy nude') to that of photographers.
Many thanks, John

It's just the latest buzz word that's in fashion that people throw about to say "I'm different to the rest of the pack" (and by different they mean better). 'Creatives' used to be the word, but that's drifting out now.

Users of these words invariably wear designer glasses and drink double decaf frappamochalattes.

more ugly-pretty than pretty-pretty, if you get what I mean. Depends on what's being shot.

For fashion, i'd say its all about angles, shapes etc. A lot more harsh lines, bold styling, androgyny, slick, and so on. No flouncy ruffly pretty girly stuff - if an edgy editorial uses a pretty dress they usually clash it with ultra boyish styling, or a heavy sort of look (eg flirty short prom dress with leather jacket and biker boots)

For beauty (or anything not about selling clothes), it's more about finding a girl with a unique face. Killer bone structure, maybe not necessarily what is considered classically pretty.

+1 I would consider 'edgy' images, especially nudes, to be something dark. Something that really pushes boundries. For example, something like Chrissie's 'playing dead on a grave' to me that is relatively edgy. Basically for me 'edgy' depicts something society doesn't agree with, something that really makes you wonder whether it's ok to shoot it or not.
