I shot with Mike on Friday as part of the Red Nose Day Purestorm initiative, and have nothing but the loveliest things to say about our lovely Northern chappie. He came well prepared with ideas and the infamous PS vest tops (which I was sadly foiled in my attempt to steal :-( ) and we had a lovely funny cheeky shoot all for a good cause, and I highly recommend Mike to models. WILL be shooting again if he dares to return to Merseyside.... x-D lol!

I'm Mike and I'm a passionate, Kendal based photographer in the Lake District close to the Cumbria/Lancashire border. The area boasts areas of breath taking scenery. Having recently returned to the area, it's time I got out of the studio and ventured into the beautiful scenry on my door step for some location shoots.

I started in photography as a youngster with a manual film SLR. I then went on to set up a home darkroom to process my own images. I am now of course well into adulthood and have now grasped the digital age with both hands. I now shoot with multiple camers including Canons EOS 1Ds and EOS 1D Mk3 with a EOS 30D for back up.

I have been described by models as being freindly, easy-going, helpful and professional with lots of great ideas. I believe in team work between model and photographer to bounce ideas off eachother to achieve the common goal of realising great visual results. I believe in making shoots relaxed and fun. A good rapport between model and Photographer puts both people at ease resulting in better images.

I'm willing to consider TFCD profjects where I feel we will both benefit.

I first became serious about photography in my teens when I bought my first manual film SLR camera. Starting with a manual camera proved to be a great foundation as I was dropped into the deep end at a young age. I was self-taught in the understanding of principles and settings of a camera and their specific affects such as depth of field and how to freeze action. Early on I learned how to meter the correct parts of a subject and make metering compensations. I didn't have the benefit of todays modern digital cameras where you can now see the image immediately. The fact that I would have to wait until the film was processed certainly focussed the mind to get it right first time in the camera. Mistakes were far too costly!

In my later teens I set up my own home darkroom. I will never forget the first time I saw an image come to life in the developing tray. It really was a magical time and I would enjoy experimenting with special effects. There was also something exciting about the wait and anticipation between taking the shot in camera to finaly seeing it in print. Doing my own processing, I was able to get this waiting time to under an hour but even that seems a long time compared to the modern, instant digital world.

With other things going on in life, I ended up taking a break from serious photography for about ten years.

In 2006 in finaly went digital when I bought a Canon EOS 30D and my passion for photography was returned. I took up football action photography as a result of my passion for footy. As I was learning, I found it to be a great test of my reflexes and anticipation but very satisfying to capture great images of football skill and passion. Many of my images have been used on the official matchday programmes and website of the Championship football team I support.

In 2007 I started to shoot models to diversify my photographic skills after joining here on Puerstorm in late 2006. I have really enjoyed the challenge to try and produce good images. There are a lot of very good models and photographers within the Purestorm community and I have been lucky to meet some great people.

I have gone on to increase the amount and quality of my photographic gear and now have the fortune to shoot with Canons professional 1D series bodies which enable me to shoot in the harshest of conditions.
