United Kingdom, England, Oxfordshire
Sabel Gonzalez was born and raised in a city on the border between Mexico and America. His father worked in the educational sector and his mother was a successful businesswoman. The family moved around a great deal and Sabel divided much of his time between Mexico and the United States until he finally settled in the UK and made a home for himself in Oxford.
Sabel’s interest in art began early on in life, but it wasn’t until his early twenties that he discovered his true passion for photography after being inspired by the works of photographers such as William Eggleston and Richard Avendon. He then went on to study at the University of Art and Design in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1996.
In 2005 he set up Studio Blanco in Oxford, not only in order to provide a space in which to explore his own creativity, but also to offer a place where likeminded artists and photographers might feel at home and pursue their own visual goals. Since the studio’s inception six years ago, Sabel has been commissioned by a number of distinguished publications across the globe.
In 2006, his Matador photographic series offered an alternative perspective of bullfighting. Sabel spent a great deal of time in Spain for this project which then attracted the attention of the 55Max Gallery in London. The collection was later sold in its entirety.
Various other commissions have included the official portrait of Sir Clive Woodward beside the 2012 Olympic Stadium, a book commission in Paris concerned with a collection of priceless, ancient masks, as well as countless publications from The Times to Max Magazine. Sabel has always said that he can find a relationship with his subject whether it is a person, an object, or a landscape, and it is this passion for narrative as well as image that has created some stunning and memorable photography over the years.
