Seems Hef' has decided there is no interest in nakedness and modesty is the new craze... he's also dropping insightful interviews..

Is that a reflection of modern day US?

For a long time (multiple decades) Playboy has been seen as tame by the standards of other magazines and so it's fair to say it's no longer simply a 'RedChecker is a naughty person mag' (anyone who says otherwise is an arse), in fact with its editorials coupled with high-class imagery it's been more like magazines such as Maxim for a long time (in fact it's always been like that) so they're perhaps they're simply realigning the magazine side of the business to muscle in on that market.

Either way, I don't think it will harm sales like many think it will as I suspect its readers are after something more than simply tits & arse. And in no way do I think it's a reflection of modern day America, more simply it's a reflection of the modern world (wherever you may be).
When you are dead, you do not know that you are dead. All of your pain is felt by others. The same thing happens when you are stupid.

There is no way they'll make the move if it would harm sales & revenue.. circulation now just 800,000..

Seems the move is so they can get on to the puritan ( as far as nakedness goes ) social network sites and reach their millions of potential customers.

I think it's a pointed, no pun intended, reflection of modern America: having a very puritanical view on the exposure of women's bodies especially. Definitely not all US citizens but certainly what pass for the governing types..

This is the reason

It will help with their porn empire...and keep the brand as a major player.

People generally don't understand how Playboy works. Its mainly a franchise.

Hefner only has direct control of USA Playboy magazine and I believe the .com site.

This is their flagship and the "respectable" side of the empire and what most people incorrectly associate with Playboy, but its not necessarily what makes the money. To drive the brand even more mainstream and distance it from the adult arena makes perfect sense and will undoubtedly help sales in other more explicit areas of the franchise. There is also another reason, adult, porn whatever you want to call it, is changing. Having a censor friendly magazine title and website is getting ahead of the game

Hefner has always been clever with his market and either he or his advisors seem to be a step ahead again.

There are country specific editions in most European and South American countries which are still relatively successful or at least successful enough to remain viable. Contrary to popular belief, there has never been a UK edition and Playboy has not enjoyed any particular success in the UK.

The main money comes from Playboy Plus which is run very successfully by one of the worlds largest porn corporations, who also operate the biggest tube sites. It features relatively explicit content and then there is Playboy TV which features hardcore porn and online gaming, webcam...etc, etc.

In the main Playboy is a porn operation still managing to maintain respectability and appeal to middle America, which is no mean achievement
I tend to be a modest man, but then I do have a lot to be modest about.

It's about 90% adverts anyway so i don't think this will make any difference to the people that still bother to buy it
