If Magnum want to lower their standards by placing image above ability,

Are you serious? Image should ALWAYS be above ability. In any medium. In any visual art form. In any art form. hell, the Beatles could barely play, let alone play anything clever. Didn't harm them did it?

Possibly an ambiguous choice of words.
In this case by image, I was referring to the personal image of the snapper not the image being produced, sorry.
Also looking at his images distinctly non-Magnum standard.

This sums up my feelings about his work perfectly.

I can see the appeal of his work (though it's far from my cup of tea) but it doesn't fit well with the rest of the images one would associate from the agency.
When you are dead, you do not know that you are dead. All of your pain is felt by others. The same thing happens when you are stupid.

it pretty much proves the snobbery is unfounded

Amateur wannabe photographers will project anything onto a situation if it doesn't suit them.

And everytime they see even the tiniest bit of data that they like they jump on it, grasp and cuddle it like a comfort blanket, if they don't like it then its snobbish or elitest or something.

Reading a post with one photographer using one tool in one given situation means nothing in comparision to the multitude of commercially stable professional photographers who know a certain tool will work in a certain situation, but have learnt that it will often let them down and need to rely on a lot of different skills.

Believe and do what you want, its your life, but unless you pragmatic about things you'll not progress very far.
