"Last week a British man who called himself Abu Suleiman al-Britani drove a truck full of explosives into the gate of Halab prison in Aleppo. The explosion, in which he died, allowed rebel fighters to swarm into the jail and release 300 prisoners. Was it terrorism or was it heroism? Terrorism, according to many commentators.

It's true that he carried out this act in the name of the al-Nusra Front, which the British government treats as synonymous with al-Qaida. But can anyone claim that liberating the inmates of Syrian government prisons is not a good thing? We now know that at least 11,000 people have been killed in these places, and that many were tortured to death. Pictures of their corpses were smuggled out of Syria by the government photographer employed to record them. There are probably many more. That combination of horror and bureaucracy – doing unspeakable things then ensuring that they are properly documented – has powerful historical resonances. It haunts us with another horror, and the questions that still hang over the Allied effort in the second world war: how much was known, how much could have been done?"

What really Hugh is a naughty person es me off is when I end up agreeing with the lefties and the Guardian because I dislike racism even more than I dislike wooly-headed leftie nonsense.

It's not Fine Art just because it's in Black and White.

And I suppose everyone who got out that Syrian Prison are now all tending their allotments and helping little old ladies across the street, rather than murdering innocent people in Irag.

Ultimately the question is not about left versus right, race, Britishness, or even religion, the question should be... What do we do about Islamic extremists who go out from the UK, to fight in Syria or Iraq? And the simple answer must be, they are never, ever allowed back in again. Simple. Good bye and good riddance.

"If George Orwell and Laurie Lee were to return from the Spanish civil war today, they would be arrested under section five of the Terrorism Act 2006. If convicted of fighting abroad with a "political, ideological, religious or racial motive" – a charge they would find hard to contest – they would face a maximum sentence of life in prison. That they were fighting to defend an elected government against a fascist rebellion would have no bearing on the case. They would go down as terrorists."

Fight abroad for a cause you believe in - illegal.
Fight abroad for the money - no problem.

Badly thought out laws enacted by idiots.

Fill the prisons with "martyrs" - provoking hijackings to get them free.
None of them remember the IRA and the PLO in the 70s and 80s - I do.

Hang them if they kill anyone in the UK, fine.
Hunt them down and kill them secretly overseas like we and the Israelis used to do, fine.
Give them show trials - Jesus wept.

It's not Fine Art just because it's in Black and White.

Oh dear...another clumsy attempt, this time by word association with Nick Griffin, to impute your completely wide of the mark assumptions about my political belefs to those of the BNP.

Nice try Hugh, but unfortunately no, your mate Nick doesn't do it for me at all!

If you are struggling with the phrase "indigenous British" or looking for a proper explanation of what the term means, I really don't think Griffin is your answer; but rest assured it has nothing to do with aborigines!

The great English (are you ok with the word English Hugh without your medication) chronicler Bede provides us with the most definitive answer of what is to be English, as opposed to being British. I would start your research with him, and try (for just ONCE) to distinguish in your own mind race from racism.

+1
not interested in the left v right,    racism or not ? arguments that i have read here,
the point is they were born here or reside here and have as such a responsibility to abide by the law of the land,
like the quote from the above we should not waste tax payers money on any future hearings or court cases, citizenship should be removed immediately and access back into the country denied, if they arrive back fuel the plane they arrived on, turn it round and .....cheerio, not even time allowed to get off for a photostore is a naughty person !

now if any of that sounds racist then i wont bother to even argue the point, believe as you will ? i have plenty of muslim friends none of whom are looking to book tickets out of the country to take up arms anywhere, they are terrorist criminals according to our laws,  IF YOU GO, BE PREPARED TO   STAY. but i'm sure we'll waste millions over the coming years dragging them through the courts when they return,, at least the latest two on the news had the balls to be identified on film and not hide their identity, or were they just dumb ?

Oh what a better place the world would be without any religion at all.
lets get shootin

These people are extremists. The form of extremism does not matter.

If they had been influenced in another way they would be the people who attack scientists in the name of animal rights whilst still using all the products that are made due to the animal tests.

If they were white then they would join the BNP, National Front (or whatever they call themselves now) etc.

In this case they are the percentage of people who are idealistic to the extreme.

They are the Useful Idiots (attributed to Lenin I believe, however, it may not have been him who said it.). Who believe that they are bringing in a utopia.

They are usually the first against the wall once whatever revolution they are supporting has happened.

The problem with useful idiots is that they are extremely dangerous.

But without politically active people (idiots you call them) we'd still have Fox Hunting, still have the Poll Tax, still have Apathied, women wouldn't have the vote, we wouldn't have decent working conditions, we wouldn't even have public footpaths in the countryside.

Apathy is no solution.

Well, we have changed. Everything has changed! We have cheap flights, global markets, cheap reliable cars, electronics, phones that fit in our pockets, the Internet and so on. Anyone over 50 will remember unreliable cars, the TV repair man, red phone boxes on every corner, their first flight being in their late 20's or 30's, beer at 60p/pint. The world moves on, dancing to its own tunes and tides, and there is nothing we can do to stop it even if we wanted to! All we can do is listen carefully to the tunes that drive the world and join in with the ones that please us most or that we think to be most right.

But we are human beings. We have our attachments. And when change threatens, we cling to what we thought we had in the past instead of looking forward to the future.

I do not pretend to know what the future will bring, but I am sure it will not bring back the romanticised "indigenous" Kingdom of Blighty that never was in any case. The Blighty of Dickens and Shakespeare, and poverty and enclosure and serfdom and terrible infant mortality.

Things change. Time moves on. We are less an island than we have ever been in our history, and that is simply an inescapable reality that is not going away any time soon. I do wish the "indigenous" population of this country would rather smell the coffee, wake up, move on, get over it, and stop looking back with rose tinted glasses!

People probably said there was nothing we could do about Hitler and the Nazis. But there was. And we did it. As painful and as destructive as that may have been.

I can't help but feel, that useless this is nipped in the bud then we could be sleepwalking into an even greater global conflict, that will last long beyond our lifetimes.

Just throwing up your hands and singing 'Que Sera Sera', won't fix anything.

Quote from pentax5AC
Having flown the multicultural flag so long from the fractured, socialist flagstaff from which it now limply drapes, you could half expect the liberals at the BBC refer to second generation Asian immigrants as “radicalised Britons”
But most indigenous British people over the age of fifty would recognise them for what they really are...TRAITORS!
British educated Muslims willing to take up arms against the UK is a complete betrayal of the hospitality afforded their parents; a sad testimony to the lunacy of open ended immigration and a wakeup call for those politicians who still fail to recognise that the supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evil, not to facilitate it.
