It's the fastest processor your budget will allow. You always need to buy within a budget.

And what if the OP COULD AFFORD an Extreme i7?
When you are dead, you do not know that you are dead. All of your pain is felt by others. The same thing happens when you are stupid.

Only if you have specialist requirements. We don't all what you do and buy the most wonderful bits of kit and then have no money to pay for shoots. You can have the most amazing high spec and high price kit but if you can't afford to book a model what exactly is the point?

And your point is?

(face it Howard, YOU are the dumb RedChecker is a naughty person who suggested getting the best processor the OP could afford)

Nope, face it Mr RedChecker that I stand by view and per my posts. If you're stupid enough (which clearly you are) to buy kit way over anything you need at the point in time then that's a decision for you.

You could always sell all your possessions and your spare kidney and buy a supercomputer but that's not was suggested.

In my original post I said:

"I read somewhere that photo editing is more constrained by:

- CPU speed
- OS you want a 64 bit one so it can access shed loads of RAM
- RAM if you have lots you can do more in memory and it'll be faster
- Scratch disks - maybe 4 disks are needed as a minimum and SSDs play a part

Graphics still play a part but less so now.

Graphics cards are also pretty cheap so upgrading is easy to do."

You've chosen to go off on one and be stupid, which you're perfectly entitled to do but you're actually just making yourself look stupid.

it always pays to the fastest processor you can afford as extends the life of a machine.

I rest my case

then if you really want to spend your money in that way it's ENTIRELY your decision how you choose to spend your own money.

Yep, by that I totally meant you should remortgage your house and buy a supercomputer.

Afford is against a budget not against how much you have in all your assets as I suspect the OP has other things he needs to spend his money on like the mortgage, bills, etc.

Maybe afford in your world means sell all your assets and don't pay the bills just so you can "buy once". For the rest of us it means buy the best you can afford at that point in time that meets your needs. You might need to buy the kit again at some point in time in the future but by then you'll better understand your requirements and how much use and benefit you'll get out of having it. If the cost outweighs the benefits then there's probably not a good reason to buy. However if you have the money and want to spend then go for it.
