Is there any simple way to permanently get rid of that intrusive apps desktop

If you have Windows 8.1 then
- Right click on task bar and choose "Properties"
- Open "Navication" page
- Check "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in"
- Click Ok and reboot.

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I get home ... assuming I don't get mugged by the pub first.

What has AutoCAD interface changes do with Win 8 ?

I was merely using it as an additional example of how software manufacturers are tampering with the productivity value of software in favour of visually impressive/flashy interfaces (that IMO actually hamper productivity).  To me Windows 8 and AutoCAD (as well as MS Office) all seem to have peaked in terms of user experience at around the time of XP and their continual development since then regarding their user interfaces has led them on a slippery path (and not for the better).
When you are dead, you do not know that you are dead. All of your pain is felt by others. The same thing happens when you are stupid.

Yes, make sure your system is up to date with all patches, then go to the App store. It should be the first thing you see there to download.

You can also access it here on Win 8:

I was fool enough to buy a HP Pavilion big notebook. Windows 8 and NOT A TOUCH SCREEN. £400+ wasted, down the pan! Totally unimpressed with HP, PC World, Windows, the whole boiling of them. Gone to an Ipad Air reluctantly.
No one said Windows 8 NEEDS a touchscreen, just took my money.
A little help is worth a lot of sympathy.

I'm only just getting used to Windows 8, but in the same way as you would get used to having bad rash, or some other affliction.
