Congratulations!!
I'm not married (yet) but have been to a few. One of the best pieces of advice I have been given is to utilise the talents of the people you know. So if you have a friend who is good at baking, ask them to make cupcakes to put on the tables. The same goes for food/flowers/invites etc etc Have a great day lovely!

It only happens all the time.

I think that's very nice, about the proposal. I am a wedding photographer and it seems there are two things, one the wedding - all excitement, romance and wonder, and frankly serious expense; and two, afterwards - the marriage. Which do you feel is uppermost?

I know of couples who have spent huge amounts on their wedding (£40,000+) only to be divorced within 6 or 7 years. I think with hindsight they would be glad to still have some of the money they spent. Especially if they borrowed the money.

I am sure there are some elements of snobbery and oneupmanship in wanting the biggest and the best wedding.

I believe a wedding costing under £1000 could still be really lovely.

Congratulations As for budget advice...since you'll only do it once...really go for it! That's what we did and every penny spent was absolutely worthwhile

That's right. Get into debt and end up financially crippled for as long as your marriage lasts for the sake of one day.
