The popularity of stick thin models is a relatively recent phenomenon. Up until the 60's a size 12 model was pretty much the norm, Marylin Monroe was a size 14 and she did alright. One can only hope that the modern trend for underweight models will pass, as to me a proportionately built size 12-14 is pretty much perfect - as can be seen by JadedRed in an earlier post.

She may have been a "plus size" model back then - however not in todays terms.

Look you can even see her ribs, lets call her a "stick thin" model from now on aye? How un-lady like (I take the Chrissie_Red is a naughty person ofcourse).

As a nation we are getting fatter, so to make people feel better about themselves the clothing companies have added inches to their sizes over the years.

Marilyn has an hour glass figure, which is something I can't dispute - its stunning. In my eyes she is not "plus sized" - especially when in internet land plus sized is usually what people call models who are probably clinically "obese".

Another internet myth and this article puts it into context with a current size 16 plus sized model. I suspect being less than 5ft6", Marilyn was size 10 in the movies and maybe size 8 when she was modelling

People are getting bigger and it is pointless comparing movie actresses or glamour models with catwalk models and Marilyn was a glamour model before she became an actress
If you have to ask why I do it, you will never understand the reason why

Ok, you are reading this and thinking.... are you crazy? Every good art nude photograph has a ballet shaped lady (or man), long of limb and toned of torso!  Occasionally the lady may have significant boobage, but always conjoined to slender, graceful hips, limbs and neck. Plus sized, no way!

Now, I'm not in the pc yes we can all be models brigade. I like the elongated beauties in cool poses against dramatic / grungy backgrounds in black and white. But then I also like Rubens, Rembrandt and Renoir, so ....   I just wonder whether there could be (already are?) beautiful art nude photographs of curvier humans? And if they are, do they tend to go over into glamour or porn,  or slightly titillating at least? Can they do it in b and w?

This isn't about anyone in particular, just pure Sunday afternoon speculation.

I was just cheking the 140+ images I took of you back in the day

They're not porn in my opinion and yes, I think they'd stand up in black and white

Just re-reading this ........... I was not referring you as "Plus size" Lisa

............. keeping digging that hole Ron

first off to expand Chrissie (who I do agree with's) earlier post is all a woman needs to be real is no Y chromosomes (as mastectomies, natural deformities etc... can still leave women with no breasts)

2nd I personally dont find ill health pretty or sexy and dont believe morbid obesity has anymore of a place in modelling that anorexia as they both promote an unhealthy image

I would class tansy as a healthy curvy model weather people call her plus size though would be individual to each person

however the photos that Katiesoze posted here I believe to be just as damaging if not more than an annorexia but maybe thats just because I have studied nutrition and now study in medicine and see constantly the irreversible damage done by obesity which is supposed to be 'modern empowerment' and these people are now being compelled as 'real women' so good forbid people have to take responsibility for their own health instead it healthy to teach your kids a healthy size 10 is stick thin, unwomanly and sickly but an unhealthy size 20 is curvy, womanly and sexy

also Marilyn was in no way plus sized please show me the image of here that shows her as modern 'plus sized'

If you think art is supposed to promote good behaviour, or to be pretty or sexy, then we have very different definitions of art. In fact the last thing I want from art is a lecture about my health, for a start it sounds boring as hell. I'm pretty sure the pamphlets at the doctors office aren't art.

Also comparisons of obesity to anorexia are just wrong, anorexia is a mental illness, thats not remotely they same thing as being overweight or indeed underweight. Using anorexia as a synonym for skinny is offensive.

first of point out ANYWHERE when anorexic was a synonym??? I never ever said skinny was wrong and the fact you got that shows you cant read (im not annorexic im an 8 now, my nana isnt anorexic at a 4-6)

second most obesity is the basis of mental disorders in most cases (addiction to food, self medicating aka comfort eating and many more disorders as reflected by many, many studies) maybe you should read more as their is only 1 physical condition (very rare and fatal) that leads to mobid obesity

if people dont have mental problem then how come their are so many morbidly obese people?
also if its not mental how is the number 1 treatment in obesity for depression?

No offence, but I can read, you can't write well. You really have no leg to stand on when your grasp on the English language is as abysmal as it is in this very post.

So when you talked about anorexia in images you weren't talking about body types, you were suggesting some magical way in which people regularly capture an intangible thing such as mental illness with a camera?

Are you really suggesting you can't think of a reason people become fat other than they are mentally ill? Have you heard of cake?

I eat plenty of cake and I'm not obese. Don't blame the cake.
Everyone knows photographers make up the hottest proportions of Britains single men. - Kater

Let the cake be the peace maker...

On topic however as a larger nude model (I have rolls and scars and goddess know what else) I really think it can be beautiful, just as slender ladies are beautiful when it comes to art nude. Art nude is just that, ART..and like all forms of art it is indeed subjective.

If anyone wants to come and photograph my wobbly bits, and scar from hip to hip then more power too you and I will welcome you with open arms- thats if you don't bounce off my jelly belly.
I'm not an artist, I'm a work of art.

This is true, I remember taking my cardigan off a few years ago in front of my sister and her kids. One of them made a comment about my ribs being "disgusting", I tried "defending" myself to no avail. One of my nieces said "no offence but I would rather be fat than unwell looking". My sister is a size 20, has never been happy with her weight and for years i've been taunted by her for being "disgusting/having no boobs etc". Its upsetting but I know why she does it, I don't agree with her children following in her narrow minded footsteps though. I would rather spend a lifetime being happy with my body (at whatever shape/size it is) than spending years trying to loose weight or put it on.. Thing is I often wonder if the world actually knows what anorexia is, I think its just some peoples way of saying "your to skinny".
