Ok, you are reading this and thinking.... are you crazy? Every good art nude photograph has a ballet shaped lady (or man), long of limb and toned of torso!  Occasionally the lady may have significant boobage, but always conjoined to slender, graceful hips, limbs and neck. Plus sized, no way!

Now, I'm not in the pc yes we can all be models brigade. I like the elongated beauties in cool poses against dramatic / grungy backgrounds in black and white. But then I also like Rubens, Rembrandt and Renoir, so ....   I just wonder whether there could be (already are?) beautiful art nude photographs of curvier humans? And if they are, do they tend to go over into glamour or porn,  or slightly titillating at least? Can they do it in b and w?

This isn't about anyone in particular, just pure Sunday afternoon speculation.

Its a different style that may suit a more rounded person.

A lot of art nude is shot with elongated or twisted poses - I think someone plus sized will look peculiar.

Bodyscapes, shapes and use of curve can work better with someone who is more rounded.

To me, art nude is more a genre - lighting, mood and feeling of the shot

But in the end, its whatever appeals to photographers and / audiences that matters and what they intend to call it. To some, anyone naked is art nude, to others, it means the whole feeling to a shot - lighting, styling, pose and model appearance
If you have to ask why I do it, you will never understand the reason why

If you search images on google for "artistic nudes" this rubenesque one of JadedRed taken in 2009 is one of the images displayed ...

It seems people must like it.

Very interesting question. I have worked with several plus sized models on artistic nude work and produced results that we were both very pleased with. Back in the day when I did life drawing I worked with a girl who was absolutely stunning but for some reason I cant recall now sadly we never did any photography - how I wish we had.

I think the bottom line is that so much depends upon attitude and passion for the work. We all need our living expenses etc but I think many models come into nude modelling as a way of earning (sometimes substantially) more than the minimum wage ut without any real interest in being part of a creative process - when that happens it tends to show in the results.

I would like to see more plus-size art nude. I think plus-size models in art nude can look great; curves, folds, flabby bits, even cellulite dimples/stretchmarks can look really interesting under creative lighting. The desired reaction of art nude isn't generally supposed to be 'do I think she's fit or not?', it's about cool shadows and shapes and light on body shapes, so I don't think models have to be slender/toned every time if it helps create something interesting. The posing of a plus-size model is admittedly usually more limited but there are other aspects to make the picture different and intriguing. I very much love good art nude images featuring the typical slender models who can twist and bend, they look wonderful; I personally just feel there's room for more meat, haha.

Are we talking plus size in modelling terms or plus the average size in women terms?
If its plus size in modelling terms then I'm sure many artnude models would fit into that category with their hips.

The things I love and notice in images of myself and other models doing nude imagery are - the shadows which fall on - the sternum, ribs, hip bones, the back of the legs *especially when she has her toes pointed* and the curve which is visible when you look at the figure front on.. I also love the expressive and energetic poses which they do. The only examples I have seen of larger ladies doing nude have been of them lying down doing "artists" type sitting images rather than really pushing their posing to the limit. This is only my opinion though, I have nothing at all against larger ladies who want to do the style I just usually prefer slimmer women for the reasons above.

Just because people on the internet say taking naked pictures of fit, young women is art doesn't make it true.

Real world art classes and internet modelling forums aren't very similar in my experience.

Both because of different motivations and differrent learning experiences.

Very true - and I admire your comment contrasting "Real world art classes and internet modelling forums" I wish I had a pound for every time i have been slagged off (and worse) for daring to say that internet modelling forums aren't the real world.

I think that Plus size models definitely have a place as beautiful Art Nude Models...
See SubstantialBeauty.com website...

Also,

The famous 1538 Titian's 'Venus of Urbino' had plenty of flesh on her...

and...

This 'take' on that famous oil painting and now re-named 'Venus of Suburbia' would have suited a plus - size model with even more curves than I have...

Having said that, I do so admire the thinner Art Nude models whose ribs clearly show as they pose...

This one of Chrissie is fantastic!-

And the gorgeous Emma McKay

Surely whatever size a model is, they can do Art Nude and still look wonderful?

Elizabeth Arden quote - 'I'm not interested in age. People who tell their age are silly. You're as old as you feel' OR LOOK...
