| chalkie7 Photographer Location United Kingdom Derbyshire Chesterfield | I've just ordered this as I'm in the same boat...really ready for an upgrade:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150887457224 Upgraded the motherboard, added another 8gb RAM and another 2TB hard drive. Still came out at a decent price. |

| Photoimager Photographer Location United Kingdom Staffordshire Stoke-on-Trent | Since most computers use components interchangeably these days this stance is even less tenable. The OS does not determine when a drive, ram, graphics card etc will fail. My self-built PCs have only hiccuped due to user error. If you had posted 'all hard drives fail so make sure you have two data drives, one to back up the other' then mentioning failure might have been useful. |

| modjo30 Photographer Location United Kingdom Cambridgeshire st neots | All computers fail you at some point - Macs less so and a PC running MS products fails the most - Avoid! Seeing as the components in a mac are no different to that of a pc you're point is stupid, apple do not make the Intel CPU or the OWC ram/Seagate hard drive/cd drive Do you want me to go on? PC For - Cheap Against - Windows Mac For - OSX Against - same components but at 3 times the price Reason there are more pc fails - 90% pc owners 10% mac owners |

Macs - good operating system - PC hardware let down by poor cooling in order to look pretty. If you really want to run the Mac OS, the best answer is to build a Hackintosh. http://pindelski.org/Photography/?cx=017663223936266788231%3As6thmyqtze8&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=hackintosh&sa=Search&siteurl=pindelski.org%2FPhotography%2F&ref=&ss=3720j1829440j10 |

| CSD_Images Photographer Location United Kingdom Grampian Aberdeen | General guideline for a PC: Intel i7 or Phenom II x6 depends on budget 16Gb of RAM - needed for high MP cameras speed is pretty much a wash so find what's affordable. Fast primary HDD - Crucial M4 or WD Raptor take your pick Secondary storage - 1 x 2Tb drive at the minimum, 2 if you can afford for back up. Mid-Level Graphics - Required for Adobe apps as they're becoming GPU Compute heavy. AMD are generally the 'best' at present for this. Sub-Systems, it's a given you should have USB 3, it's about 3-5 times faster than USB 2 in my testing and you at least see if you can get hold of a p-SATA port (powered SATA) or an e-SATA hot dock with PSU for external hard drive back ups. This would give native HDD speeds externally to the case. I use 1Tb HDDs for back up and just swap them out when full or finished backing up. Windows 7 or Windows 8 both are optimised for SSD usage with Win 8 being even faster than 7 on boot(the BIOS takes longer to initialise than the OS in comse cases), with Windows you are now buying into the best eco-system for cloud facilities and media if that's your cup o' tea. The Modern UI (formerly called Metro) takes quite a bit of getting used to on Win 8 but as of October 26th all new PCs will start shipping with it If you envisage tablet usage or Windows Phone in the future then MS Windows 8 Apps marketplace should be cross-platform compatible again if that's of interest to you. |

| Dekker Photographer Location United Kingdom Berkshire Reading | Yeah, look, this whole Mac/PC thing is bull It comes down to a few things -- firstly, cost, and second, supported software and hardware. A PC will cost you significantly less -- I bought a BEAST of a machine for under £1000. Quad-core i7, 16Gb RAM, SSD + 1Tb data drive, 2Gb GPU etc. With the money I saved between PC/Mac decision, I bought 2 x 24" monitors for my Lightroom work. A Mac gets you much better integration with iPad, AirPlay and any other iPeripherals you have kicking about the house. Creative software is nearly always available on both Mac/PC, but be more aware of any peripherals you have...that situation is a lot better than it was a few years, but still worth checking. Oh, and if you ever play any games, ever, then don't bother with Macs. For stability/anti-virus/crashing/blue screens...it boils down to how au fait you are with technology. Windows machine are targeted a lot more than Macs, and the ecosystem is infinitely bigger so problems do happen. The irony of course, is for every fanboy convincing their friends and family to move to Mac due to "better security", they will undermine their own argument as Mac becomes more popular. So, I'd say -- if you're technically minded and don't have a massive budget, you could EASILY save yourself £800+ by going PC. However, if you don't have the time/inclination to mess with the tech and maybe have a lot of Apple stuff, and have some extra cash burning in your wallet, go Mac. ...also, be aware, Macs can run Windows (because Microsoft is more flexible than Apple on licensing Windows!), so you could get the best of both worlds. That gorgeous Apple hardware with a real operating system. |
