| Gerry99111 Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey Guildford | Reading the Singh Ray own website, they warn against the risk of getting viginetting - particularly on full frame sensors because the variable ND is far thicker than other screw on filters. These are the equivalent of Lee in the USA and very well respected http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html A couple of other options for you to consider: 1) By a slot in filter system - such as Lee that means you can serve all your lenses by buying the rings to suit each filter thread diameter and then slot in one or two square ND's to drastically change the effect 2) Buy the largest filter diameter ND [probably 77 mm] and a step up [not step down] ring for any smaller lenses and then two screw ons - say a 3 x and a 6 x. Setting the aperture correctly in manual should give you plenty of options. I have found Heliopan to be excellant ND screw ons - they are better than most at controlling colour casts |

| eosfan Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey Guildford | Thats probably the best filter size to buy. As regards make, I haven't checked to see if they actually do a variable ND but all my filters are B+W, and certainly recommend them. Dave |

| Photoimager Photographer Location United Kingdom Staffordshire Stoke-on-Trent | Unless that 'tint' is a single shift then custom WB will not 'correct it'. Using an accurate CTO gel, for example, produces a single shift that can be corrected for. Using, for example, an old Cokin ND filter that gave reasonable results on negative film but not on reversal / slide film due to the shifts, will not be accurately correctable by WB settings. |

| Photoimager Photographer Location United Kingdom Staffordshire Stoke-on-Trent | Agree with Gerry, go large and determine the size by what will be. That probably means either 77mm or 82mm depending on CaNikon or if you use Sigma lenses. Vignetting can be a problem with 'crop' as well as 'full frame' lenses, particularly if the lens is designed for 'crop' ( EF-S / DX / DC etc ). Ask yourself if you need a variable ND or a fixed ND. If looking for misty seas etc then a fixed ND from 6 stop on might do. If looking to also use in conjunction with flash to be able to reduce ambient etc then a variable is likely to be the route. Makes -remember that: - you tend to get what you pay for, relatively - most makes have different quality ranges Personally I find Hoya HD to be my preference followed by their Pro 1-D and then B & W MRC. I have used Heliopan and, at the time, they seemed to be on a par with Hoya's HMC range. |
