true long gone are the days of the old top gear that did proper car reviews with the guy from the classic tomorrow's world

I've never really watched it, only maybe the odd couple of minutes of the odd episode, but from what I saw, "Fifth Gear " seems to be a better source of info than Top Gear when looking for realistic info on a car that the majority of the population can afford.

Its amazing how people have such differing opinions about the same cars and how when choosing a car, common sense and logic often goes out the window. Any sane person would probably choose a skoda, solid, reliable and cheap and basically just a VW with another badge. All these taxi drivers cannot be wrong. And I understand they come top in surveys and owners love them and buy them again and again. Me?..wouldn't be seen dead in one...and I know that is stupid and irrational and goes against any sane logic...:-)

Until last week I would have agreed wth you.
Drove a felecia to 160000 miles.  It was a joy.

Now my mother's Fabia 1.2 has developed electrical faults with only 60,000 miles, eats petrol like it is going out of fashion.

I was going to get one (I really like the VRS)  but I am now looking at Fiesta, Kia, Hyundai and Suzuki instead.

Riding on the Gotterdammerung. Down and down she goes. Where she stops no one knows.

Mazda MX5?!? PAH! An MGF is the way forward! I loved mine. Yes, the head gasket went, the alternator broke, the exhaust fell to pieces, the hood went mouldy and the headlights interior reflective coating flaked off and I spent more time with the engine in pieces on my living room floor than actually driving her...but that's all part of the fun! Currently driving a Mitsubishi Galant 2.5 V6. Heavy on the insurance and fuel but she has done nearly 175k miles and is still going strong. Flew through her last MOT with no advisories. Beautiful, growly looking car as well and all for only £1300. Can easily fit my sons huge pushchair and a weeks worth of shopping in the boot with room to spare.

You're a jinx., missus mail
I got a hot rod ford, and a two dollar bill; And I know a spot right over the hill. Theres soda pop and the dancings free So if you wanna have fun, come along with me.

i have heard they are pretty unreliable, yet they are so expensive...!

Well both my daughters each own a Range Rover Sport and they love them! Mind you they are rich bitches and can afford them so cost isn't too much of an issue LOL.

As far as I know, they are probably still the best On-Road  4 x 4 around. You'll have probably more choice of vehicles when the new plates come out but whether or not they will be cheaper is another thing!

If you can even consider a Range Rover, then we are all paying you to much...lol

It would cost you an average of at least £1000 a month in running costs (servicing/fuel/insurance) before you even take purchase price into consideration:-)
I tend to be a modest man, but then I do have a lot to be modest about.

I was recently looking for an economic run around, with benefit of 4 wheel drive (for winter), compact, yet able to hump gear and seat 4. The quirky looking Nissan Juke looks like an option that ticks most of the boxes.

My last Rangerover classic (1989) did 250,000 miles.
My current one (1990) is at 135,000 miles, and I'm expecting the same mileage.
My daughter has another (1990) at about the same mileage.

If you can find a good classic (not easy), you can keep it going for ever, but it'll need regular repairs.
A diesel one isn't too expensive in the long run, because there is no depreciation.
A petrol one (like mine) is more expensive to run.

You can get a Rangerover mark 2 fairly cheaply.
They don't rust, but expensive electrical faults will kill you unless you have someone local with the right diagnostic gear to fix it on the cheap. Dealer prices of £1,000 for parts aren't rare.

Rangerover 3 - lovely, but silly money to run at the moment.

Discovery 2 - quite a nice vehicle - not as nice to drive as the Classic rangerover, and they rust worse, but there are lots of good ones about.

*******************************************

Have you thought about a Freelander?

My other daughter has one (1998 diesel), and loves it.
Much better road car than the bigger ones.
About 35-40 mpg.
She's been driving it in Cardiff - city traffic - for the last year.

It's not Fine Art just because it's in Black and White.

Unless you live in the country , then why even consider a Range Rover? Nothing
worse than the roads blocked up by 'Chelsea Tractors'.

What do you need the car for? and what is your budget?
At the moment most of the cars you are looking at will be very
expensive to buy, run and get insurance on.
My imagination wants to see the vivid colours of reality .

I regularly drive through London and Paris in my old, battered Rangerover.

Nothing better for a Paris rush hour than a dented Landrover.
