| HowardJ Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey | Question though, if i copied over the whole of the C-drive onto an external drive, less the operating system, i'm guessing then connecting to the new computer the programmes wont run? its not he same as installing them? Correct it's not the same as installing them. it does get you access to your custom actions and other data though. You could do a clone but it depends if you're changing OSs as part of the upgrade. Windows 8 is supposed to be out around Sept/Oct so it might be worth waiting. |

| Siras Photographer | ... well, funnily enough it did just that! - fitted and running with no hiccups at all - even my saved passwords are all still there and working. Perfect - and I just Iove my new SSD, so fast Have to agree with others that cloning probably only works this well if you're not changing systems or hardware, but then again if you're only doing a hardware upgrade it's probably worth a try. |

| redbaron Photographer Location United Kingdom Buckinghamshire Stoke Mandeville | As pointed out Windows has a utility built in to do this for you so there is no need for additional software. Even so I would still take time to note down serial numbers, save any downloaded program installers and backup you contacts music and other vital stuff just in case. But of course you have all that done already just in case there was a crash on the old computer right! Personally I have never used that method though as as well as copying over all the useful stuff you also end up with the clutter and junk neither you or windows ever got rid of. I much prefer a clean install. That way I can make sure I have all the latest versions of everything. The only snag is that the last time it took me a couple of weeks to get everything moved over completely. A few more years and I suspect it will no longer be practical for many of us to do that. Once sorted I rip the old drive out from the previous computer and connect it back inside the new one. Then at least I can still access those vital documents, pictures and other stuff I still managed to overlook. |

| DJ200 Photographer Location United Kingdom Hertfordshire | The motherboard on my Quad core went the other week, so I had no choice...needless to say it was an "obsolete" board (5 years old). I had an i7 built, and asked them to install my existing hard drives. No problems except the progammable mouse operating programme doesn't "work". Everything else is perfect. Mouse can wait until I simply HAVE to format again. Regards David |

Just select the actions folder, click save actions anfd they're exported as a file you can load later. (at least thats how it works on a mac.) |

Thanks, you just need to highlight each action and save it individually but i've been able to do a few tool presets too so looking good. Transferred all docs to external hard drives although my model photo folder (1st copy) is saying 8.5 hours to go! |
