| Diabolik Photographer Location United Kingdom West Sussex Brighton/Worthing | I've never really done any sports photography but I'd like to give it a go. My local football team have agreed to let me come along and shoot at some of their pre-season games which I thought would offer me some good practice. I have a sony a77, but with only a couple of stubby-arsed lenses at the moment (upto 105mm). I'm guessing I'll need something with a reach of about 250/300mm at least? And as fast as possible too. I'm currently on the slightly skint end of the money spectrum so I'd really appreciate any advice on affordable lenses for this model. I've done a little bit of research but I'm starting to tie myself in knots, so if anyone can help out I'd be extremely grateful. cheers. oops. spelt lens wrong! |

| PeterH Photographer Location United Kingdom South Yorkshire | You can shoot football with a 105mm if you work within it's limitations. I'm assuming this is lower league football and you can get within a few yards of the goal line, so you should be fine. Wait for the action to come to you, don't go chasing it, and don't worry about what's happening at the other end. Plant yourself behind the goal, where the penalty box joins the goal line, and wait for the play to come to you. Try that before spending on a new lens. I shot football at Sheffield Utd/Wednesday whilst at college using nothing longer than a 105, using the "if they don't come into my part of the field, they don't get their picture taken" rule. My tutor regulary shot football on a 50mm using the same principal. |

| Diabolik Photographer Location United Kingdom West Sussex Brighton/Worthing | Of course, I realise that skintness is a vague state of affairs. I would hope to be able to pick up something useable for under £500, probably second-hand. Is that wishful thinking? |

| frankpht Photographer Location United Kingdom London | What you need to ask yourself is how much am I interested in sports photography. A 300mm 2.8 lens will set you back considerably a 70-200mm 2.8 the same. Google these lenses Sigma Tamron and of course Minolta. Sony lenses will at this time be to expensive. |

It's the mighty Worthing town FC playing a friendly against Brighton. I'm going along to a few of their matches over the season, but maybe I'll hold off on buying another lens until Worthing make it into the premier league. |

Serious money so try with your own available lenses. Though these lenses will be great lenses for all types of photography |

| Diabolik Photographer Location United Kingdom West Sussex Brighton/Worthing | Thanks Frank, a lot of the lenses are lower priced than I was expecting. Would f4+ be a waste of time? |

| Marty_W Photographer Location United Kingdom Suffolk | I use a sigma 70-300 lens I picked up cheap from a studio I worked at years ago. Paid £130 for it and still use it with my faithful Pentax. I do a lot of work for BDSFL and get good results, helps being at the right place at the right time. |
