Is modelling a long term career?

Is it possible these days for a model to have a long term career or is modelling mostly ( there are some exceptions ) a young persons' game?

I ask because you now see models (Peta Todd, Sophie Howard and some others recently) giving up successful careers as glamour models to study for longer term careers ( teaching, nursing, etc. ) or to setup their own businesses. Some of these models are in their mid 20s.

Is the money just not there to keep these models interested?

or is the work all the same and they get bored?

It's all well and good jetting off for the odd shoot overseas and partying, but I guess eventually they want to settle down, get married, have kids, have more of a predictable routine they can plan a family life around.

How long does a girl's modelling career generally last these days? (retire at 26? so you need to have made it by 23?)

Depend on what type of modelling. I've notice more and more wanted to get into acting as a long term possibility and use modelling as a foot in the door to get notice.

Super Model, Daphne Selfe is still modelling in her 80's...not to mention Twiggy of course.

If you still have 'it', look after yourself, you figure is good etc., if the camera still loves you...if a model still LOVES modelling, then long term modelling can work for some...

Some professional models like me, relaunch  after a break from modelling then go back at an older age, ( after successful careers in their 20's & 30's.)

Some models  go back after having children...
IF one has a passion for modelling then long term career is definitely on the cards...(camera memory cards..)frown

Modelling is my passion.

For the vast majority of models NO.

Relationships, babies and just having a life interupt the model career, although I do know several that have been fashion and commercial models, who dip into modelling again when they are older, and when other commitments allow them too.

There does seem to be a good number of mature adult models who make quite a good living over a number of years.

I don't think it has an age limit, you can carry on for as long as you want to. Maybe the girls get fed up and want more of a secure job hence the training for other careers, but no reason why you cannot combine the two if you wanted to.

Yeah, but I'd say that's a niche market and the majority of models wouldn't switch from fashion or glamour to adult as they get older.

I guess many models never have a plan to "make it" and model until they get tired of it like any other job. I know quite a few who do evening classes or courses while they're modelling to add strings to their bow for when they do retire from modelling.

Yes, there will always be exceptions like Twiggy but I guess she has become more than a model as she was around at the right time when the Beatles were happening and some of the big celebrity togs, so is interviewed about that kind of thing and is used to market to an older age group who can associate themselves with her.

I was thinking that most agencies want someone relatively young who they can work with for a good 6 to 10 years and is therefore worth them investing in. If you were 28 and targeting a market which uses models in the 18 to 30 bracket then you might struggle to find an agency to take you on for what might only be 2 years.

How do models find agencies react to your age if you got into modelling relatively late?

I doubt if you'll get many posts from models in respect of commercial work as the ones I know dont use this site/look at the forums much.

But as far as I'm aware, one of the biggest target sectors on commercial modelling is the 25 to 40 age group and again as far as I'm aware, being in this age group is no bad thing, indeed the scarcity of suitable models in this band, makes it an advantage.

There are very few "career" models on sites like these, other than adult models and a few art nude/fetish models, most just pass through for a couple of years.

Not many girls sustain/want to sustain a long career as a model as its not particularly conducive to other aspects of "normal" life...basically, as most successful career models will tell you...they don't really "have a life," having pretty much sacrificed "normality" to have a modelling career.

Also, as I'm sure you have noticed, very few girls can/will make the lifestyle/health commitment required to maintain a top notch career, even at internet level. My experience is that for most girls in their early 20's, a couple of years modelling ruins their figure. Constant travel, lack of excerise/gym work, junk/fast food and trying to fit alchohol and partying in between all this, has a very quick and detrimental effect on appearance.
I tend to be a modest man, but then I do have a lot to be modest about.

Your question is like asking 'How long do cars last for ?'

There are so many variables it doesn't make any sensible basis for discussion.

To have a long term career a model will have to specialise to some degree, there are clear differences between fashion, glamour, adult, catalogue, beauty etc.

And what's a long term career, working until you have enough money to retire ?
Like any dealer he was watching for the card that is so high and wild he'll never need to deal another...
