| oldmandon Photographer Location United Kingdom Gwent Newport | Looking at the crop vs full frame, I'm guessing the focus point is on the models knee - difficult to say accurately on a web res. image though. Silly question but are you selecting the focus point correctly, focussing on the eye? I had selected a focus point, and had focused on the eyes!! All the comments are appreciated, hopefully there will be a good outcome |

I did a conference group shot a while back with a 24-105 and shot both RAW and jpeg (neutral). The images without processing were so soft that I couldn't see any facial details - and a cheap point and shoot gave more detail! After processing,in Lightroom, the RAW revealed stunning detail across the frame. |

I was expecting it to be sharper to begin with, and was surprised that one of Canons top lenses wasn’t as sharp as I thought it would be without editing. Lets have some settings to try and I’ll post the results. Oh I use photoshop CS6, don’t have lightroom. Not yet anyway |

Not yet anyway I think you may get quite a suprise - RAW files aren't sharpened at all in camera, and the processing software does the work. If you try shooting RAW and jpeg (normal) at the same time, the jpeg will look a lot sharper out the camera. A processed RAW will prove it's worth though! If you like, mail me over a copy of the RAW file and I'll work some magic for you to see what can be gained. Let me know if you'd like a mail address. M |

| Gerry99111 Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey Guildford | I am afraid you are going to have to run some tests yourself to eliminate any issues. You need to eliminate 1) Camera shake - shoot at higher shutter speed - may well have to increase ISO or shoot on tripod 2) Focussing issues [back / front focussing] - unlikely but focus something that is uniform and runs away and focus on the mid point - use say a 12" rule - if nothing is sharp then something is wrong - if it is sharp behind or in front of the 6" mark, then that is your problem 3) Shoot in JPEG & RAW - if the JPEG is sharp - then it is your raw converter 4) Focus point issues - use the centre point only and focus on something in the centre - ie do not compose and recompose If that fails, there are probably other things you can look for but these are all tests you can do yourself and should be easy. The picture does look soft but I cannot tell why |

| andybramahphotograph Photographer | Its common knowledge that the 24-105 is soft wide open,no matter what body you use it on. It also displays noticeable barrel distortion so avoid straight lines or get used to having to correct in post processing. This lens is best used at medium apertures as at the stopped down end it can suffer from defraction. Its really an "l " lens to appeal to users who aren't going to use it for extremes. Its a good everyday lens. For critical work the 24-70mm is stunning at any aperture or focal length. | |

Mine is reasonable sharp wide open and is sharper than the 70-200 f2.8L IS Mk1 at f4 in similar focal range. |

| VB_Photo Photographer Location Africa South Africa Cape Town | My 24-105 is pretty sharp wide open at 105mm after MF adjustment on both my 5D2 and 7D. Before that it's performance was disappointing, so try that first before anything else. I also noticed that you focussed on the eye using an outer focus point. On a 5D2 and some other models the outer focus points are not very accurate. I prefer the focus and recompose technique on my 5D2 which seems to work very well. |

| Photoflash Photographer Location United Kingdom Hertfordshire Watford | Lenses vary in quality regardless of price, I use film on a RB67, (my foreign clients prefer film) a friend has a camera shop and had a lot of 50mm Wideangle RB lenses, He let me try them all, I used Agfapan 25 and I kept a note of the serial numbers, they were all OK except one which was much sharper, even wide open. So thats the one I bought. Needless to say I will never sell it! I also have a digital Fuji with a few lenses including a 300mmf2.8 which is very sharp at f2,8 I guess I was just lucky with that one. |
