| oldmandon Photographer Location United Kingdom Gwent Newport | Does anyone use the ef 24-105 f4 L lens? If so have you had any soft issues with it? I used mine for an outdoor shoot the other night and all looked fine, however on inspection on the Mac, at 100% the images are quite soft. Settings were 125th at f4 iso 250 @ 105mm, and IS on. I shoot in RAW and the body is an EOS 50D. I also used a 17-40 at the same settings and that is sharper?! I decided to to a test at home, got an object, put the camera on a heavy tripod, mirror lock and remote release, then took a series of images at all apertures with both lenses mentioned, in both normal and live view modes. Now the 17-40 is sharper than the 24-105 at pretty much all settings even viewed at 200% compared to the 100% of the 105??!!. I have found that the 24-105 is soft at f4, f4.5 and f5. At f5.6 it pings into reasonable sharpness. Has anyone else experienced any similar problems? Is there any way to fix the softness or have the lens checked? Please help as I really really wanted this lens and pushed for it so want it to be right!!! |

| Gerry99111 Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey Guildford | I use it and mine is sharp but to be honest, it normally gets used at smaller apertures. Its my primary landscape lens on a full frame body and gets well and truly battered and is still going strong When you say "reasonable" sharpness it should be sharp at about F8. It will be softer nearest its widest aperture. The shorter the focal length - the greater the depth of field so you may think the 17-40 is sharper when it could be an optical illusion Two more things to think about: 1) Are the focussing conditions good? 2) Try shooting at a faster shutter speed at 105 mm - say 160th or 200th to eliminate camera shake as a possible reason There are more scientific tests to measure sharpness and other artifacts - camera magazines use them to test lenses for articles - try searching google |

| RedChecker Photographer Location United Kingdom Buckinghamshire Stoke Mandeville | You're using a crop-body with a relatively high pixel count, so not surprising the lens won't be pixel-sharp wide open. I think you need to be comparing both lenses on a full-frame body to see how they behave (the 17-40 may simpy have a central sweet spot the crop sensor is making use of wheras the 24-105 may well be consistent across the whole image circle) Daft question.... have you got a filter on it? |

| mph Photographer Location United Kingdom Cheshire Crewe | Oops - I was choosing from a few and didn't notice I had changed the speed! But camera shake may be part off the problem even with IS -I can certainly get it! Meant to say 105 mm too |

| RedChecker Photographer Location United Kingdom Buckinghamshire Stoke Mandeville | The old 1/focal length rule is so out-dated now IMO, it was fine in the days of film when printed and viewed at a sensible viewing distance. Nowadays we have arguably finer 'clean' detail in digital and we can pixel-peep which IMO means we have to far exceed the shutter speeds of the 1/F rule. Just saying |

| mph Photographer Location United Kingdom Cheshire Crewe | Agreed - people take it as a safe speed - rather than the absolute minimum. Mind you with IS it should be OK. | |
