Ok, something here that just puzzles me. For those of you who aren't aware of it, Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland. It only has a few thousand people, but it is a proper city, with hotels, proper roads, traffic islands, street signs etc. But, even if you drive from one end to the other you will be hard pressed to do a journey of 3 miles (and thats following the streets, not as the crow flies). The only hard surfaced roads in Greenland are in Nuuk - but thats not all. There aren't even any dirt roads leading away from Nuuk that people with 4x4s could drive on - the rocky terrain just get mental at the edge of the city.

So Nuuk is like this little video game world - and everyone is driving around in cars. But why? Why would you incur the running costs of a car, or even want to bother (especially in such a cold climate where short journey are terrible on engine wear) if you pretty much can't go anywhere. Its just the sea and rocks - nothing else to drive on but the tiny city.

I know its probably not interesting to most people, but I just find it so funny and odd. Nuuk must have the lowest mileage cars in the world!

Might be terrible engine wear - bit if you only do 500 miles a year - who cares?

And three miles on foot in the cold........

True. I just can't imagine the cost though - they must be pricey, importing them all the way from Denmark most likely, and there can't exactly be lots of used cars floating around. I just love weird little places that make no sense. Reminded me of the Truman show or something when I was looking at Nuuk on Google Earth - no roads to anywhere but town.

I felt a similar irony when I went to Brunei. The capital is small and has the only metalled roads in the country. And yet, the Sultan's son had bought a Mclaren F1 to add to his collection of fast, low-slung supercars. Where does he drive them?
