Dear All in the Make-Up Department.

I was enjoying using my camera with a Model before Christmas, when I heard her say that she does not some work from Top quality Photographers , simply as her Eye lashes turn to Spinders Legs  ...!! What

Is there a way to stop these, . From the amout of adverts on the tele , Never knew anyhting about this . Nor do the manufactures.
I'm hppy to buy the right product , for the right model and if it makes them happy even better.
Does a models eye lashes diiffer , where say Mac is no good but another brand is better.
Any help I would be greatful
Thanks

Paul

This is a difficult one, mascaras are a mine field as there are hundreds on the market. The "spiders legs" to me is from a rubbish mascara that is too thick, dry or clumpy, and how it is applied, and how clean the lashes are to start with. I have been to many shoots where the model has arrived with make up still on particularly tons of day old mascara that needs to be cleaned off first as applying mascara over old stuff looks terrible!! cheap mascaras can be thick and clumpy. But you don't have to spend the earth either. I love a lot of the L'oreal mascaras, there are tons of others too, it's all very nice have say Dior or Chanel mascaras at £20/£30 but as a pro make up artist we can't use the brush on the wand and have to use disposable wands and they dry up or use up quickly as we use them a lot so I find a good mid price range say £10/15 mascaras just as good. Also if the model has eyelash extensions then specialist mascaras are needed. Another point to bear in mind is that on a lot of my shoots I use strip eyelashes so my mascara is only used as a base then strips are applied in varying styles, sometimes natural sometime big and glamourous. So in answer to your question in a round about way It is nothing a Photgrapher does to make lashes look like spiders legs more like the application of mascara unless the photographer draws them on in photoshop which I have seen some horrendous examples of even in top adverts !! hope this helps

Lets just say it is probably the reason most girls go for a wax before wearing a bikini...

Hello SimplyDevine.
Thanks for the time to answer the problem. It is soemthing that a model need to learn , and not just turn up and apply, like wise a camera chap needs to allow for time to built into a shoot. Even allow a budget for a MUA. Which is something a lot do not consider when shooting a model.
I am always somewhat amazed when a models says she can "do" her own make-up and the face get done, but stops at teh neck line and the model cam look like a "Panda" with hard line just below the jaw.
But Hey what do I know .
Again thanks for the reply .

no problem happy to help, but yes a lot of models think they can do their make up for a shoot as an MUA would but many can't. lol if only everyone could have a budget for an MUA hey?? best wishes Karen

The following is taken from my profile on NM. Some people find it offensive, but that is the ones that I am aiming it at. Those who know how to apply mascara aren't offended as they take the care to learn and the time todo it properly.

"Don't get grumpy, but can some of you models learn how to put mascara on, that is, put it on, rather than throw it on from a shovel. If someone turns up with spiders legs hanging in and out their eyes, I won't even get the camera out the bag."

I think it is something they should teach in school to girls, maybe instead of metalwork as it is more appropriate for them :-)

funny ... i like it ! and so true sometimes and funnily enough when I started out in make up I also worked part time in a school and we had a recreational week where we taught the kids non academic subjects and I ran a class on skin care and make up it was a massive hit with the girls and I hope to have stopped a few orange faces and spiders legs amongst other things lol

I don't it needs to be blunt / rude.I some photographers who don't take the camera off "P" or Auto, and only shoot in J=peg !
I think some models think thay want to pose, May just need a helping hand , and as so would get more work and great varierty of faces around. Besides it is always nice to see a fresh face. Maybe if models . or MUA got together and did a workshop , they could start to network and go from there.
I have now go to point where instead of also looking through the lens I now look more at the make-up wonder which eye shadow would go . Gone off red nails...
