I thought this was a nice job - done by the model as well.

I think you wanted THIS Andy

Now see, this is a really good go, but I think this proves the point of the thread, this is done by the model, and straight away, for me, the eyebrows aren't even, they're far too thin, and the hooks of the inside corners of the eye also not symmetrical, which is distracting.  I know it's picking, but as an mua, I notice these things straight away.  Compare to makeup such as THIS

This is by Viktoriya Markova on PS.  For me, the correct symmetry and thicker, more defined lines on this make it stand out and give it a stronger photographic presence than the above makeup done by a model.
The simple fact is, muas are trained to know the difference between a nice makeup in the natural light, and a stunning makeup on camera.  There is a big difference between the two, and allowances have to be made for the transferring of face to camera, which is something any good mua understands, and sadly most models doing their own makeup don't.
Andromeda is a rare example of someone who can produce utterly breathtaking and stunning makeups on herself; a lot of the time you end up with girls who think you need to be 'more tanned' for camera, and the result is like photographing a wotsit! emoticon
Why 'loosen the pursestrings' and hire an mua? Er, well, they will produce the look you want, enhance your models features so she looks the best she possibly can, and will give your image a professional, polished finish.  It's basically a question of 'do I want this image to be the best it can possibly be?' If yes, then budget for a decent mua.  Simples.

80% perfect..... 20% good make up!

Absolutely right! Good point well made. You need specialist to concentrate solely on their own jobs and skills.

I don't want to be nasty as clearly it is a nice make up, well thought out and very unusual, but I cant see past all the editing, personally I wouldn't put that in my portfolio because I want people to see my skin work, the texture of the skin, the colour matching etc.

That's not to say none of my images are edited to some extent but I do show un-airbushed skin where you can see freckles etc. I'm just not a fan of the plastic skin look

I agree with you completely Claire. Over edited images dont show a MUAs skills up as any foundation disaster could be lurking underneath the airbrushing!!!

Although i have to say that the image posted on here with the shoes IS one of my FAVOURITES!! I have looked at it many times and thought WOW!!! Well thought out makeup!!
