Location United Kingdom West Sussex Shoreham By Sea | ...however the suggestion seems to be that there is a requirement for a lens longer than the 24-70. i'm suggesting the difference between 70 and 85 is not that much, so the 105 may be a better focal length. i personally find it difficult to get a tight crop in camera when shooting portraits with an 85, especially children. also, the closest focusing distance on the 85 has been a bit of an issue. To be honest, I`m after sharpness and also the discipline of using a prime, recently got back into my 50mm and its making me a bit more active while shooting, as well as slowing me down a little. I`ve heard such good things about these lenses, and a fair few photographers on here I admire use them. I`ve got a 70-200 F2.8 should I need to get away from me subjects :D |

Location United Kingdom West Yorkshire | The thing with primes is by their very nature all of them offer slightly different things. Adictive they can be, once you get hooked you kind of want the set..even if you don't use em I think it's down to these Nikon 85 1.8 £300 Nikon 85 1.4 £870 Nikon 105 VR f2.8 £600 Nikon 105 DC f/2 £790 For me performance to the £££ the 85 1.8 wins hands down |

Location United Kingdom Surrey Farnham | God, listern to all these experts.... blimey , and it is clamied that using a certain slows you down...what taking a photograph. Learn to walk , and get the 85mm then if you decide to use the two legs , and go forward it may have the same fame as the 105...Oh yes . That is if the model is happy for you to be that close...How long is this studio? Oh who are you to decide who should be allowed on this site.... expert pro togs from cheap side of Bighton only .mmm? I thought also that post editing allowed to sharpen a decent RAW , but taken on a sigma ,would require 150% each time still soft photo. Nikon Glass every time, but I guess you had your reasons for a naff lens? Oh thanks all for your nice comments, Such a friendly place, at times. |

Location United Kingdom Staffordshire | Just to add confusion. Now that I'm getting it sharp, my lens of choice for this sort of thing is 135 F2 DC. However, on my last two shoots it was a little long at times for the space available so I went down to my 85 F1.8, reluctantly. The 135 is much smoother in tones whereas the 85 1.8 can look artificial in it's rendition. Inbetween these are the previously mentioned 85 F1.4 as well as the 105 DC. People commenting on the slow focus of macro lenses - have you got the focus limiter on ? Also - manual focus 105 F2.5 ( not macro ) Sony lenses, best ones are made by Zeiss aren't they ? See Robert White's for the Nikon fit manual focus Zeiss 85mm F1.4 IF IQ is more important than AF. |

Location United Kingdom London | I have the 85mm 1.4, which cost me £420 brand new 2½ years ago. It's used on half my photos, so it was money very well spent. If you're just talking numbers, then yes the 85mm 1.8 is only 2/3 of a stop behind, but you don't pay more for the 85mm 1.4 purely for the aperture. It's about the aesthetics. But if you're going to stick with apertures... okay, well, I can get tack sharp images with my 85mm 1.4 at f/2. My first photo of SherbetFizz (when she had green hair) was shot at f/2, focused on the eyes of course, and the photo required no sharpening. I'd challenge an 85mm 1.8 shooter to get the same result at f/2 (which is just 1/3 of stop down, and therefore not as sharp as the 85mm 1.4 at the same aperture). In that respect, the aperture does matter. I've use the 85mm 1.4 on my film Nikon F90X, and the bokeh is phenomenal. Bokeh on the 85mm 1.8 doesn't look quite as nice, but it's impossible to compare aesthetics. You have to see it for yourself. I borrowed an 85mm 1.4 off Conrad (if you remember him on here?), and I decided it was the right lens for me after just half an hour's use. It was the best £420 I ever spent. ~ squodge ~ |
