... humiliate the little tosspots in front of the(ir) peers ! ...

Spot on, I think.

The main thing lacking now is any sense of shame or humiliation. Time was, most people knew the difference between right and wrong and those that transgressed recognized that, like it or not, they deserved what they got.

Kids now learn that they have the God-given right to do whatever they like, without much in the way of real penalties and certainly without any need to suffer any public humiliation. They can literally run riot until they're 18 and no-one's even allowed to mention their name in print !.

Sounds old-fashioned perhaps, but I feel that we, the tax-paying, law-abiding public, have the right to see these people paraded before us - the town centre on a Saturday morning sounds good to me.

if a man speaks in the forest and there's no woman there to hear him, is he still wrong ...?

I read that BNP statement and it actually speak some sense - how ironic that it takes a load of far right racists to speak some sense on law and order. It was also quite interesting in its social comments. Ok there was the obligatory immigration twist but the rest was actually quite a good reasoning.

I feel sympathy for the police but I also accept that they are accountable and some of the "you touch the crims and you'll be locked up" attitude of some of them are quite disgusting. It is symtamatic of the way law abiding citizens are targetted for fines as they are a soft touch and the thought of even remotely getting ac rminal record is enough to keep them in their place.

I think that the biggest problem is this whole human rights bollox that bleeding heart left wing socialists have brought to the table over the last 12 years. There is this attitude that crime, like obesity, is a disease and not a personal choice. Until these left wingers made people accountable for their actions and not blame it on some excuse like social poverty then it will get owrse and worse. Poverty is no excuse for criminality

Unfortunately there are also other mitigating factors that I think are causing the sneering attitude in the young. From music to TV there is such a lack of strong moral ethics coming though. And I say this as someone who loves punk and heavy metal.

I also think that the Christian guy who mentioned screening porn on tv is bonkers! there have been lots of papers written on the link between pornography and violence. It sounded very much like the novel I'm reading now Brave New World

We have enjoyed the visits of a local family and their friends for a couple of years. Vandalism, theft, damage you name it they have caused it. The Police come and say we need evidence. So for months I photographed the families activities and went to the council who had housed the family. It turned out the council had put them in a 'safe house' for their own protection. They had been moved after threatening another problem family. The council refused to act and demanded I hand over ALL my evidence. Big mistake, I went back to the police and they went to the council. Things quietened down for a while until they started on another resident. This time I video taped it along with fottage of the family, the house and the road name plate and posted it on the web. Couple of weeks later they had a late night visit.
Nobody saw anything unusual and it took the police over two hours to respond. They learnt a valuabale lesson that night.

Reintrouduce capital punshiment for all murder when proven beyond doubt.

I strongly disagree with the idea of having different severities of penalties according to how strong the evidence is. That idea would go against all notions of justice. For something as serious as murder, there should be only two possibilities: 100% indisputable proof, or not. And then you fit the penalty to the crime. If it's not proven beyond doubt, the answer should be not guilty—not a milder sentence.

Apart from that, I'm opposed to captial punishment, though in a few very special cases I can understand the factors of expediency that influenced the decision (e.g. the execution of Saddam Hussein, which was fully wrong morally like all executions, but which could be considered a military action against a person who had the potential to one day regain power and introduce new tragedies). However, if there's going to be capital punishment, I think it should be done in as dignified a way as possible. I don't want a situation like in the US where prisoners have sat on death row for ages, or been pyschologically tortured by prison staff, and then desptatched using a cruel and unusual form of execution, or a bungled procedure.

Quote Get the fine dodgers out of jail and into community service.

Agreed, in the cases where this proves possible.

QuoteLegalise all drugs and make them available on prescription. This should destroy the dealers market and the people who need help would actualy get it.

Agreed, but if you make them too hard to obtain OR too expensive, then there will still be a black market. Look at the effects of high cigaratte taxation, which is thought by some people to have actually INCREASED smoking because it encouraged an influx of cheap black market cigarettes,

QuoteI would legalise prostitution through properly licensed brothels. This would help get the girls of the streets and offer them some protection.

Agreed, as long as there are adequate regulations. Leaving human welfare to the free market doesn't suffice, even if it's a legal market.

QuoteI would also allow hard core porn to be broadcast on late night cable or Sky. This would hopefully reduce the amount of sex crime.

This is controversial. My gut reaction is that it wouldn't make a big difference one way or the other, but should be done anyway because I don't agree with censorship of what grown adults can watch in their own home.

Quote I would also introduce a lesser crime of sex without consent to deal with "date rape" or "drunken rape" juries maybe more willing to convict a person of a lesser crime than they would full rape.

I suspect that would be a thorny issue. Most people would argue that sex without consent is rape, period. Otherwise you'd have to somehow say that a particular incident wasn't rape because the victim “would have” consented if she had been in a position to do so. This is a departure from usual ideas of justice. Also, as it would be a lesser crime than rape, and it would be held in the public's mind as less serious, which means some very serious crimes would be thought of less seriously than they should, and some very dangerous criminals may be thought of as less dangerous.

Skymouse,

I did actually mean that if the evidence for murder is not 100% then the verdict should be not guilty, a guilty verdict does mean the rope.

I do see your point about rape cases, I just thought that by introducing a lesser crime, more juries may convict when they would normally have found the accoused not guilty of rape.

Cheers
Les

Apparently one of the side effects of National Service was that it brought together people from wildly different backgrounds - toffs, oiks and everything in between. Had a tendency to knock chips off shoulders all round.

I am parked outside a shop only a couple of weeks ago when a group of 4 youths rob it in front of me and even show the shopping keeper what they nicked when I ask the shop keeper why they didn't try and stop them the reply I get is what can I do followed by it takes the police at least two hours to respond. What can you do you cant stop them or grab them for fear of a knife or the Police arresting you.

So these youths no they can do this walk in nick what they want and work away with their loot. The shop is only round the corner from the local nick and I am not even sure they even reported it in the end.

Trouble is these kids are running around doing what they want some even have their own sprogs, we used to send them to Australia now we want to go there to get rid of them.

But if you think the kids are bad wait to you meet the parents!

Best thing to do is put them on an island together like in Escape from New York!

tmg the point being if you're a nice law abiding citizen why should you be forced into national service along with the undesirables?

from my point of view if i was forced into national service i'd imagine it'd turn me from a pleasant person into someone unpleasant.
